9:8 “The trees were determined to go out 1  and choose a king for themselves. 2  They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king!’ 3  9:9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘I am not going to stop producing my oil, which is used to honor gods and men, just to sway above the other trees!’ 4 

9:10 “So the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and be our king!’ 5  9:11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘I am not going to stop producing my sweet figs, my excellent fruit, just to sway above the other trees!’ 6 

9:12 “So the trees said to the grapevine, ‘You come and be our king!’ 7  9:13 But the grapevine said to them, ‘I am not going to stop producing my wine, which makes gods and men so happy, just to sway above the other trees!’ 8 

9:14 “So all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘You come and be our king!’ 9  9:15 The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to choose 10  me as your king, then come along, find safety under my branches! 11  Otherwise 12  may fire blaze from the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’

14:12 Samson said to them, “I will give you a riddle. If you really can solve it during the seven days the party lasts, 13  I will give you thirty linen robes and thirty sets 14  of clothes. 14:13 But if you cannot solve it, 15  you will give me thirty linen robes and thirty sets of clothes.” They said to him, “Let us hear your riddle.” 16  14:14 He said to them,

“Out of the one who eats came something to eat;

out of the strong one came something sweet.”

They could not solve the riddle for three days.

14:15 On the fourth 17  day they said to Samson’s bride, “Trick your husband into giving the solution to the riddle. 18  If you refuse, 19  we will burn up 20  you and your father’s family. 21  Did you invite us here 22  to make us poor?” 23  14:16 So Samson’s bride cried on his shoulder 24  and said, “You must 25  hate me; you do not love me! You told the young men 26  a riddle, but you have not told me the solution.” He said to her, “Look, I have not even told my father or mother. Do you really expect me to tell you?” 27  14:17 She cried on his shoulder 28  until the party was almost over. 29  Finally, on the seventh day, he told her because she had nagged him so much. 30  Then she told the young men the solution to the riddle. 31  14:18 On the seventh day, before the sun set, the men of the city said to him,

“What is sweeter than honey?

What is stronger than a lion?”

He said to them,

“If you had not plowed with my heifer, 32 

you would not have solved my riddle!”

14:19 The Lord’s spirit empowered him. He went down to Ashkelon and murdered thirty men. He took their clothes 33  and gave them 34  to the men who had solved the riddle. He was furious as he went back home. 35

[9:8]  1 tn Heb “Going they went, the trees.” The precise emphatic force of the infinitive absolute (“Going”) is not entirely clear. Perhaps here it indicates determination, as in Gen 31:30, where one might translate, “You have insisted on going away.”

Some ancient textual witnesses (e.g., LXX and the Syriac Peshitta) read “fourth,” here, which certainly harmonizes better with the preceding verse (cf. “for three days”) and with v. 17. Another option is to change שְׁלֹשֶׁת (shÿloshet, “three”) at the end of v. 14 to שֵׁשֶׁת (sheshet, “six”), but the resulting scenario does not account as well for v. 17, which implies the bride had been hounding Samson for more than one day.
